Scan Others Button
Scan Others Button

The Scan Others Button allows you to examine nearby avatars. It can identify registered players, humans, and Blighted Abominations.

Unlike the Scan Region Button, Scan Others only searches within your current scanning range. The scan covers 360 degrees, so avatars do not need to be standing in front of you.

Click the button to display a list of nearby avatars, then select the person you want to scan. If several avatars are nearby, additional pages may be available in the target-selection menu.

Scan results are displayed in your nearby chat and are only visible to you.

Scanning Range

Your maximum Scan Others range increases as your character ages.

Your Age Standard Scan Range
0–29 nights 18 metres
30–59 nights 22 metres
60–119 nights 26 metres
120–239 nights 30 metres
240–419 nights 34 metres
420–699 nights 38 metres
700–1,049 nights 42 metres
1,050–1,449 nights 46 metres
1,450–1,899 nights 50 metres
1,900–2,399 nights 54 metres
2,400–2,949 nights 58 metres
2,950 nights or older 62 metres

The scanner has a five-second cooldown. If it is used again too quickly, the HUD will tell you how many seconds remain.

Player Scan

When the selected avatar is a registered player, the HUD requests their public scan. A public scan contains less information than the private scan produced by the Scan Self Button.

The following is a fictional example. All player, clan, bloodline, and house names were created for this wiki page:

╔═★⋅•⋅∙∘☽ Descendants of Darkness ☾∘∙⋅•⋅★

║ House Role: Night Warden
╚═•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅⋅•⋅⋅•∙⋅∘☽★☾∘⋅∙•⋅⋅•⋅⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•

The username shown by the HUD is a clickable Second Life profile link.

Depending on the player and their affiliations, a public scan may include:

  • Username
  • System role
  • Generation
  • Species
  • Current status
  • Dark Rating
  • Legacy score
  • Age group or rank
  • Current and maximum Blood or Energy
  • Bloodline allegiance
  • Bloodline leader
  • Bloodline role
  • Clan and clan role
  • Player title
  • Umbral Bond
  • House, Pack, Coven, or Order
  • Affiliation role

Fields without information are automatically omitted.

A public scan does not reveal private information such as the player's exact age, birth date, sire, subsistence, essence, Bloodline DNA, followers, or the person they are following.

Witches and other Energy-based species display Energy instead of Blood. The affiliation label also changes by species:

Species Affiliation
Vampire House
Lycan Pack
Witch Coven
Hunter Order

Dead Player Scan

A dead player's public scan is shorter than a living player's scan. It may display:

  • Username
  • Date of death
  • Cause of death
  • Banned status, when applicable

Private details about the player are not included.

Human Scan

If the selected avatar is not a registered player, the system treats them as a human. A new human normally begins with 5 litres of blood.

A human scan may look like this:

╔═★⋅•⋅∙∘☽ Human Scan Result ☾∘∙⋅•⋅★
║ Human: Rowan Silverbrook
║ Status: Novus Sanguis
║ Blood: 5.000 liters
║ Protection: 0.00%
╚═•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⊰⋅⋅•⋅⋅•∙⋅∘☽★☾∘⋅∙•⋅⋅•⋅⋅⊰⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•⋅⋅•

The human's status reflects their remaining blood:

Status Meaning
Novus Sanguis New blood with a full 5 litres.
Sanguis Plenus The human has at least 4 litres of blood.
Sanguis Medius The human has between 2 and 4 litres of blood.
Sanguis Exiguus The human has less than 2 litres of blood remaining.
Sanguis Nullus The human has no blood remaining.
Ignotus The human's blood status could not be classified.

Sanguis Nullus is the correct term for an avatar with no blood remaining. It does not merely mean that the avatar is not a registered player. A human with this status cannot be fed upon while their blood remains depleted.

Human blood gradually regenerates over time.

The Protection field displays the progress of any protection placed on the human by a Hunter.

Blighted Abomination Scan

The scanner can also identify a Blighted Abomination. Its scan may contain:

  • Status
  • Current blood level
  • Essence reward
  • Echo or backstory

Abomination scans do not display:

  • Protection progress
  • Resurrection progress
  • Revive scheduling or cooldown details

Hunter Protection and Witch Resurrection do not apply to Abominations.

If the Blighted Abomination is dead, its scan may instead display death information and the person or force responsible for killing it. Any Abomination-specific return behaviour is separate from Witch Resurrection.

Masquerade Warning

Public scans contain information protected by the Masquerade.

Do not copy, relay, or publicly reveal another player's scan to non-players. Showing this information to someone outside the game is a violation of the Masquerade and may result in a ban.

The Scan Others Button cannot be used when your character's current status prevents HUD actions, such as while dead, sleeping, dead from hunger, or banned.
