Wear your DoD HUD and use its ordinary scan and attack controls. You must be alive and awake to attack. Safe Zones block combat, and the target must be within your current attack range.

Scan a nearby target

  1. Click Scan Others on your main HUD. It searches for nearby avatars within your scanning range.
  2. Read the target list and choose the letter beside the avatar you want to scan. The scan appears in your chat.
  3. Read the creature name and its Status, Blood, Reward, and Echo. The blood amount tells you whether it is still alive; the reward tells you the Essence offered for its killing blow.
  4. For a named Void creature, read any power offer or cooldown line. See Void Powers for what that line means.

A creature's status or your combat display may still use the word Abomination. Use the name in its scan to distinguish Riftstalker, The Writhing One, and Hollowmaw.

Abomination scans omit Hunter Protection progress, Witch Resurrection progress, and ordinary human revival schedules. Those abilities do not apply to these targets. For the wider scan controls, see Scan Others.

Attack the creature

  1. Move within your attack range. Face the target when using a directional attack; The Writhing One's Coil allows attacks behind you as well.
  2. Click your species' main attack control on the HUD. If there are several nearby targets, choose the letter beside the creature's avatar in the target list.
  3. Choose a damaging attack from the intensity menu. Hunters use Focused or Relentless; Witches use Ethereal or Celestial. Protection and Resurrection are human abilities and cannot be used against Abominations.
  4. Stay within range while the attack runs. Watch your HUD's combat display and chat for progress and the result.

Click the main attack control again during an active attack if you want to stop. See Attack and Feed Button for the general controls and Combat for ordinary combat restrictions.

Read your reward

The player who delivers the killing blow receives the creature's individual Essence reward. Damaging or discovering it first does not reserve that reward.

Every Abomination kill is permanently recorded, adds to your Abomination kill total, and also counts as a human kill. Qualifying combat against Abominations can restore Hunter Energy. Website period rankings and Chronicles count encounters differently from a lifetime total; see Website and Records.

A named Void creature can award its matching power as well as Essence. An ordinary Abomination does not award a Void power. If you received Essence but no power, check Help and FAQ.

Discover creatures through normal play

A rare transformation can occur when an eligible living ordinary human is scanned or genuinely damaged. Humans with active or partial Hunter Protection or Witch Resurrection are not eligible.

If an eligible human does not transform, repeated scans or attacks do not provide another chance for 30 days. After that wait, a later eligible encounter can provide another chance. No particular scan guarantees a transformation.
